Arkansas Attorney General said the Racing Commission is required by 1935 law to inspect a dog racing track applying for a franchise. The opinion was requested by West Memphis Alderman Freeman Finley. Gov. Faubus declined comment on the suggestion amid Southland Racing Corp.'s bid.

Arthur Godfrey dismissed his housekeeper Mrs. Ingeborg Sorensen after she was questioned by Nassau County detectives about marital life of former employers Mr. and Mrs. William C. Woodward Jr. Sorensen said the firing came via a secretary who cited other arrangements. The Woodwards' marriage troubles preceded Mrs. Woodward’s claim she shot her husband Sunday, believing him to be a prowler.
An explosion at Velsicol Corp insecticide works in Memphis killed Vernon F. Wilson, 39, and seriously injured two others. Thirteen more workers, including three firemen, were treated for smoke inhalation and burns as the 75 foot high structure was ripped apart but its metal frame remained. Cause is unknown.
Juraj Slavik, a former Czech diplomat who quit after the 1948 communist takeover, accuses Moscow of using arms supplied after Korea and Indochina to incite anti Jewish strife in the Middle East. He cites Skoda factories at Pilsen Dubnica Brno and Povaska Bystrica producing heavy weapons under underground operations.

A battle between Israeli and Egyptian forces has left more than 250 dead. In East Meadow New York a woman arrived at Meadowbrook Hospital for leg treatment and, after being asked about valuables for the safe, produced 63000 dollars in various bills. The hospital advised transfer to a private facility. the patient’s name was withheld.
Surgeons described a medical miracle after a steel worker crushed in a locomotive accident benefited from a new artificial lung. The patient, weighing 235 pounds, endured 35 fractures and severe internal injuries yet was kept alive as the artificial lung enabled breathing and bone healing.

Israel cites 50 Egyptian deaths and 4 Israelis killed, while Cairo reports up to 200 Egyptians killed and claims Israeli losses near El Sabha and El Atja post, amid disputed border control and prisoner claims.
A San Antonio divorcee described to Texas Rangers that she killed her new husband Don Worden and dragged his body into a grave he forced her to dig. She said she kept vigil all day and night and later hunted a ranger to recount the story. The couple had met in Bend Oregon and married after a brief relationship, with Worden reportedly giving cash, a home, and jewelry as part of their union.
