Hearings to audit how federal research results reach local governments

Lt I Washington reports hearings begin Tuesday before Rep Ray Thornton to assess how well federally funded university research is transmitted to state and local governments. Investigators clear police in prison death

Vaughan, 21, died August 21 from heat illness at Cummins Prison Farm. Investigators found no criminal charges, noting guards did not use physical force. Seven inmates reported a guard strike, but officials cited minor inmate altercations and lack of breakfast as contributing factors.

State agencies close Friday in Bryant memorial note

Gov. David Pryor said agencies could close Friday as a sign of respect for Bryant. The department has about 40 state employees and received calls from some who objected to Armstrong's decision. They declined to identify themselves. Armstrong noted the state flag at the department was at half staff in Bryant's memory. Nobody complained to him.

Waldo man charged in bank holdup

Larry Box, 20, of Waldo was arrested and charged with bank robbery after the Thursday holdup at the McNeil branch of the Bank of Waldo. Special Agent John Kelly said Box surrendered to FBI agents and Columbia County deputies. A gunman entered the bank, displayed a firearm to a teller, demanded cash, and fled on foot with 2409 dollars.

Bryant 67 longtime Hope resident died Thursday night in Little Rock hospital. He is survived by Elizabeth Sutton Bryant and others. Governor Pryor ordered flags half mast and state offices closed until Monday morning in tribute.

Judge orders removal of six children from Grannis vigil site

Polk County judge J B Stevenson ruled on Friday to remove six children from a Grannis vigil where their parents and more than two dozen others awaited doomsday. The three boys and three girls are placed with Mr and Mrs Roy Simolin and attend Gil nearby. The court cited violations of mandatory school attendance and allowed limited visiting with parents, with nightly return to the Simolin home.

Blood donors sought for open heart surgery case

The Red Cross seeks twelve units of Annegative blood for a Hope patient in Bempstead County. A special trip will pick up donations at 11:30 a.m. Monday from First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Hope. Contact John Henley at the Chamber of Commerce office 3840. This is not replacement blood and must be fresh for the operation.

Little Red River Trout Campgrounds Near Lobo Landing

The Little Red River nearby attractions include Rainbow and Little Red River Trout Dock and Campgrounds across from Lobo Landing. The area offers canoe trips, rustic campsites with hookups, limited cabins, and horseback rides along name trails. Fishing uses corn or cheese and reports note a 15 pound rainbow. A valid license and trout stamp are required.

Two Killed In Arkansas Auto Pedestrian Incidents
