High court bans evidence used in rape case

The Arkansas Supreme Court overturned James E. Moore's rape conviction and life sentence after ruling searches outside Moore's room and under his bed, without a warrant, violated rights. The decision barred evidence from the room and from Moore’s bed, including a victim’s purse, and criticized police conduct at the boarding house in Mississippi County. Breakout at Cummins Prison Farm Leaves Inmate Dead

Security guards fired on three inmates during a pre-dawn breakout attempt at Cummins Prison Farm in Arkansas. Oliver Wright Jr. of Little Rock was killed. Percy Henderson of El Dorado was wounded and Henderson’s status was stable. Howard Johnson, 25, implicated but not injured, had been transferred to maximum security.
