An inmate was killed and another wounded during a predawn escape attempt at Cummins prison unit. Oliver Wright Jr. 28 was shot and died. Percy Henderson 23 was wounded and remained in stable condition. Both were inmates for murder. Wright had long sentences and arson convictions. Henderson was serving life for capital murder. The escape occurred as they climbed a fence around 1 54 a m. Guards fired from towers and a patrol vehicle. Wright died at the infirmary. The last successful escape was over a year ago.
Jim Lanagan, a 30 year old Cincinnati steel worker famed for lifesaving exploits since 1963, helped direct rescues in the Beverly Hills fire in Southgate Kentucky where at least 159 people died. He had earlier saved three at the Indianapolis Coliseum fire and faced danger again on a 18 floor girder rescue during the Merchants National Bank blaze.
The Beverly Hills Supper Club fire raised 160 dead as recovery resumed. Emergency crews expanded searches with a crane while officials and relatives mourned at a Fort Thomas armory. Survivors blamed electricity failures and shortages of safety systems amid calls for retroactive fire safety laws.
The Beverly Hills Supper Club burned before 1970 and was rebuilt without sprinklers though not required by law. Mayor Ken Paul calls for new state and local sprinkler rules as rescue teams pull 159 bodies from rubble and survivors report a rapid loss of lights and darkness during the fire.
Secretary Cyrus R. Vance urged the 27 nation Conference on International Economic Cooperation to keep narrowing the gap between rich and poor countries. He said the North-South dialogue should continue even as talks consider limited transfers to UN groups. The U S would add 375 million dollars to aid for the world's poorest, with a 1 billion fund tied to conference success and oil stability talks remaining unsettled.
Dr Roy Edwin Thomas promotes the social study of mountain people to preserve culture and dialects. He has conducted about a thousand interviews across Arkansas Missouri and seven Appalachian states recording speech and values, seeing dialect as a millstone around youth while hoping to start a new academic field.
Two people died in a frame house fire south of Camden Ouachita County authorities said the blaze occurred about 3 am on the old Smackover road. Earlier reports of three deaths were corrected. the victims include one man and one woman and relatives had not yet been notified.
By midmorning today 307 traffic deaths were reported as the Memorial Day weekend rush continues. The National Safety Council had expected 460 to 500 deaths over the three day period ending at midnight tonight.
