Mrs. Melton, 73, of Jonesboro, recalls surviving eight tornadoes and remains unafraid as the early Sunday twister heavily damages her home. The storm kills three and wounds over 200, with parsonage and houses damaged nearby while residents aid neighbors and local journalists mobilize for continued coverage.
A gospel singing program will be at the city auditorium at 8 p.m. May 29 with acts including the Swan Silvertones of Pittsburgh the Gospel Keynotes of Tyler and Clarence Fountain of the Blind Boys of Alabama. Gloria Spencer will perform as a special attraction with advance tickets at 2 dollars and 2.50 at the door.
A 10 hour adult class on Day Care and Child Development will be held at the Hempstead County Child Development Center from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday June 1 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday June 2 with lunch provided. Resource persons include Diane Wilson Ouida Burrage Betty Jo Hayes Marie King and Carole Lester. A registration fee of 1.50 covers lunch and materials.
About 20 000 to 25 000 people gathered in a valley 10 miles north of Eureka Springs Arkansas for the Ozark Mountain Folkfair. Performers who were unable to play Saturday due to thunderstorms performed Sunday as threats of more storms loomed. Thunderstorms and tornado warnings forced musicians and organizers to shelter in tents and cars Saturday night.
U S warplanes bomb insurgent positions along the Mekong River southeast of Phnom Penh as a convoy from South Vietnam sails upriver. The eight convoy in two months included six oil tankers two cargo ships and two ammunition barges. Cambodian intelligence says 8000 enemy troops cluster near Neak Luong base. A 135 truck road convoy arrived from Kompong Som carrying rice and fish. Across the border in the Mekong Delta a ferry was attacked with 11 killed 34 wounded. Canada’s Gauvin says fighting has risen since the cease-fire.
Two unrelated accidents occurred Sunday in the Hope area. Mollie Cornelius and Alex Washburn were in a minor crash on Highway 29 at 3:40 p.m. Washburn was charged with failure to yield. Bates Hoss and Joyce Purtle were in a separate crash in front of the Post Office at 6:20 p.m. No injuries and minimal damage reported.

Experiment station report covers 24 hours to 7 am Monday with a high of 78 and a low of 62. West and northwest winds 15 to 30 mph today, mostly cloudy with scattered light showers in the north and partly cloudy in the south. Tonight and Tuesday mostly fair with cooler today and tonight and a little warmer Tuesday. Highs today mid 60s in the northwest to upper 70s in the south. Lows tonight mostly in the 50s. Highs Tuesday low 70s to low 80s.
