A federal judge dismissed a suit claiming the Wat The Chester School Board discriminated in dismissals of four Negro teachers for the 1969 70 year after Pleasant Hill School was unitized with Chester High School. The ruling held the evidence did not prove discrimination.
Charles G Plumlee, 25, of Springdale Arkansas, was killed in a two truck collision on U S 59 in Stillwell Oklahoma. A jackknifed trailer blocked the highway as Plumlee's truck neared, and the rear of the trailer struck his cab. He died en route to Stillwell Hospital.
Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller, speaking at a news conference in Little Rock, said he has stronger leanings toward a possible third term. He plans to decide based on the state's best interests, not polls. Filing deadline is June 16.
Mrs. Myrtis Polk of near Helena won 13,500 from a Phillips Circuit Court jury for about 13 acres condemned by the state Highway Commission. The Highway Department valued the land at 34,000. Polk had sought 25,000. The land south of West Helena will be used for a bypass.
President Nixon urged the nation’s business leaders to help fight inflation by keeping prices in check. In a 244 hour private session with 46 executives, he sought to reassure markets about the Cambodia troop move and discussed voluntary wage and price restraint rather to mandatory controls. Winthrop Rockefeller allocated $12,000 from the emergency fund to finance summer make up classes for about 155 Negro students in Carthage who boycotted, after the Carthage School Board agreed to offer summer sessions to earn credit and promotion. Education Commissioner A W Fard recommended the measure.
Hope Fire Department responded to a blaze on Highway 67 west at 6 am injuring a wheel on a large trailer truck bound for California. The truck, owned by Filen Corp, sustained wheel damage only, Fire Chief Jim Cobb said. Emmet High delegates to Girls State are Ann Avery and Bonnie Booker, daughters of Doris Avery and Mr and Mrs M O Booker, noted as outstanding students in the EMS school system. Dr and Mrs G D Royston of Rope Arhs were honored by Monticello College as continuing members of the Harriet Newell Haskell Society at a luncheon during commencement. SMU conferred over 1,800 degrees on May 4, including Albert Grow Weisenberger of Hope, who earned a Juris Doctor degree. he is the son of Royes Weisenberger of Hope.
