The Associated Press reports 48 deaths from storms across 10 states with widespread debris and damage. Officials tally missing persons and displaced residents as storms sweep through the region leaving significant destruction and multiple casualties.
Reports list heavy damage across Missouri Indiana Pennsylvania Kentucky Maryland Iowa Tennessee Texas and West Virginia. American Red Cross set aside a relief appeal. Pembina North Dakota logged 23 degrees as the coolest reading in the early hours while Nye Plains records show near normal temperatures. A coal wave passed Chicago and moved east with generally fair seasonable weather and showers in Oklahoma Illinois Michigan and Indiana.
Washington May 24 James Forrestal former defense secretary will receive a hero s burial with cabinet pallbearers and crowding turnout. President Truman hails him as a casualty of war and his funeral will be at Arlington National Cemetery with a 19 gun salute and taps. The service will be simple with Bishop Wallace Stover in attendance and the casket moved from Bethesda Naval Hospital to Arlington by hearse and horse drawn carriage.
Sixty head of hereford cattle were sold for 39540 at the John W Olvey ranch near Harrison on May 24. Purchasers included Governor Turner of Oklahoma whose representatives bought the top lot for 3000. The highest price was 3590 paid by Honey Creek ranch Grove, Oklahoma for Miss Helens 761.
In Little Rock, a Pulaski circuit court jury found Robert Louis Smith, 42, guilty of first degree murder for the May 4 slaying of his ex wife, Sally May Barner, on a sidewalk near University Hospital. The verdict triggers automatic execution by electric chair, with sentencing set for later. Prosecutors hailed the swift trial as a model against a string of murders.
The 43rd annual convention of the Ar kansas Federation of Labor opened here today and runs through Thursday. Scheduled speakers included Ralph Wright assistant secretary of labor.

London May 24 UPI The Bow Street court granted a three day delay in extradition proceedings against fugitive Communist Eisler and ordered him back to Brixton prison. Defense protests accompanied by Communist demonstrations as extra police guarded the court. The postponement was at the American request to allow more time for evidence preparation.
Lt. Col. Helen Puivi ance, a Salvation Army officer since 1908, will retire this week. She helped serve doughnuts to American troops in France in 1917 after being sent abroad with 11 officers, turning out hot pastries in a village near the front.
Little Rock May 24 A 15 year old girl and two male companions were held for investigation after a car chase. Don Eugene Landon Kenny Baxter 23 Marselyn 15 and Robert Jacob 19, all of Nashville Town, were captured south of Little Rock by State Police Sgt Petersen. The group allegedly stole a car at Murfreesboro and fled from a filling station near Conway without paying for gas before abandoning the vehicle.
Harrison voters decide on installing parking meters after a general April vote rejected the idea by a small margin. A special election was held today to revisit the proposal and determine the meters’ fate.
At a Hot Springs bankers' convention Col H T Barton urged Arkansas not to rest on its laurels and to redouble efforts for continued industrial progress. J W Pulbright spoke on balancing the federal budget via across the board cuts. The text also discusses Cold War era concerns about communism and East Germany.
AP reports a violent start to the week in Arkansas with two homicides, five personal crisis incidents, two train deaths, a traffic fatality, a drowning, and an electrocution. Victims include Andrew Jones, 45, killed by a southbound freight near Homan. Mrs. Marvin Outlaw, electrocuted at Wick repairing a damaged storm wire. and 14-year-old Wayne Camp who drowned while fishing near England.
Joly Eugene Anderson, 27, faces criminal court charges in Memphis for a $43,000 bank robbery tied to February 8. A St. Louis veteran, he is among two gunmen accused. the other, Clyde Milton Johnson, will be tried in federal court. Both were captured in Florida by the FBI and linked to the Miami area raid.
Little Rock May 24 4 pension system for Arkansas highway department employees will begin operating July 1. The system, authorized by the 2940 legislature, requires participating employees to contribute four percent of their salaries while the state adds three percent. V L Scott serves as street committee chair of the pension board with C C White as vice chair representing the employees. The state comptroller, the treasurer, and the highway director are board members.
