The Arkansas Federation of Labor opened a three day meeting in Fort Smith with Dr. M. F. Dickenson of Washington DC representing the Farmers Union. Dickenson cited Arkansas farm homes with 46 percent having one to three rooms and 18 percent with only one room. Other speakers included W. C. Smith and Floyd Barham and Dr. Charles Bauder.
National Labor Relations Board member Gerard Reilly testified before a House committee that Montgomery Ward Co has a long history of labor law violations in its Kansas City Portland Ore and St Paul plants. He argued these practices contributed to the Chicago strike that led to the government seizure of the Chicago plant on April 26.
Detroit May 23 The Chrysler Corp strike ending idle time for nearly 12 000 war workers was called off by Local 490 CIO United Automobile Workers. Strikers ordered back to work as the local’s executive board acted before appearing before the UAW CIO councils. International heads urged employees to disregard picket lines and reenter plants.
