Rainfall totals rise in Hempstead with May excess

Predicts Sharp Drop This Fall in Price of Watermelons
The Office of Price Administration announced prices for watermelons will fall this season. A parity return to growers will be established for country shippers and wholesalers, with fixed retail markups to households. The effective date is not set, but from now until July 4 the price is 33 dollars a ton F.O.B. shipping points, and from July 5 to season end the price drops to 26 dollars a ton.

Seized Ward Plant Resumes Work Today
Springfield May 22 The Hummer Manufacturing Company second Montgomery Ward property seized by the army within four weeks resumed production under government control as workers on the early shift returned to jobs. Lt Col Nelson Talbott said 198 of 200 early shift workers reported at 7 am. union spokesmen said over 90 percent of the 325 normally on two day shifts agreed to report. The plant employs 450, including about 100 office staff. No disturbances followed a 17 day shutdown caused by a strike of AFL machinists over the War Labor Board contract directive. The WLB had ordered a one year agreement and said the company is 70 percent war material. The plant makes propellers, carburetors and gun mounts for aircraft, plus farm equipment. The army seized the Montgomery Ward Chicago properties last April 26 and returned them May 9.
