Essay Winners to Be Announced Thursday in Hope Star Contest

Hope Star will announce the $400 high school essay winners for Hempstead and Nevada counties Thursday after judging completed just before noon. Names will be bulletined in news broadcasts on KXAR Hope and KTPA Prescott at noon, with No. 1 prize essays and authors pictured in Thursday's Star.

Central Arkansas may see showers and thunderstorms tonight and Thursday with 60 to 80 percent area coverage and little temperature change. Low tonight in the 60s high Thursday in the low 80s with widespread cloudiness in Southwest and Southeast Arkansas and similar shower chances over 80 percent.

Local Graduates Receive Honors At Hope High Awards

Hope High School held its ninth annual awards assembly recognizing seniors and underclassmen for the 1964-65 year. Fourteen seniors qualified for the Society for Academic Achievement with indictions including Betty Schenck and John Scott Andrews. Janet Pruden earned a one year honor graduate status.

Arkansas Head Start programs announced with total cost

President Johnson announced 71 Head Start programs for Arkansas as part of anti poverty efforts. The federal share totals 739 014 dollars with local funds covering the rest of 844 140 dollars for the state wide effort across numerous towns and counties.

Mannis Seek Stay on Guardian for DeWitt Boy

Mr and Mrs Floyd R Mannis of DeWitt ask Arkansas Supreme Court to block naming a guardian for their son Roy under the state's compulsory smallpox vaccination law. The Mannis, members of the General Assembly and Church of the First Born, oppose vaccination. The high court has ruled religious grounds cannot void the law.

Bennett Ruling Case Postponed in Arkansas Chancery Court

A suit challenging Attorney General Bruce Bennett's voter qualifications ruling was postponed to May 28 in Little Rock chancery court. The case seeks to add Pulaski County Clerk R. S. Peters as a party and to challenge Bennett's six month residency vote restriction for general elections. Thomas H. Glaze, a Fay­etteville native, filed suit before the last November election.

Rescue Ice Breaker Heads Home from Arctic Mission

The USS Edisto returned to Boston harbor after a month long Arctic operation to rescue 20 people from a melting ice slab northwest of Iceland. Arlis II the Arctic ice island carried scientists between Alaska and the Greenland Sea for four years. The evacuation completed on May 10 at Keflavik Iceland.

Bombers Strike Viet Cong in Binh Thuan Province Raid

Vietnamese fighter bombers killed 85 Viet Cong in Binh Thuan Province after a forward air controller spotted enemy assembly. The attack lasted about 20 minutes with heavy bombs and machine guns. In a separate raid, U.S. carrier Coral Sea aircraft targeted two zones near the DMZ, destroying barracks and a radio station and causing major damage to facilities in Hoan Lao and Chanh Hoa.

Two incidents reported by City Police yesterday. At City Hall parking lot Larry Baker backed into Mrs Weaver Quillen’s car causing slight damage per Investigator John Shirley. Both involved city employees. At Third and Main a collision between Joe Jones’s auto and Joe T. Brown’s pickup caused minor door damage. Brown charged with failure to yield.

Injuries Fatal to Youth in Police Chase Fatal

Fayetteville Arkansas reports the death of 19 year old Harry Rainwater of Rogers from injuries after his car struck a tree during a police chase. Patrolman R D Arnold said officers pursued Rainwater after being summoned to a disturbance at a drive in. Rainwater drove away when officers arrived.

Salinger's Wife Sues for Divorce in Hot Springs

Nancy Salinger files a chancery court divorce suit against Pierre Salinger former Kennedy administration press secretary alleging general indiscretions. Radio Story Explains Station Growth at Kiwanis Meeting

Jake Moore Award Honors Yerger High School Student
