Washington May 11 military casualty totals rise to 201 454 across all services. Army figures total 156 676 with 27 297 killed 64 321 wounded 33 715 missing and 31 343 prisoners. 37 009 wounded have returned to duty. Navy and Marine totals show 44 778 casualties with 19 221 killed 12 070 wounded 9 034 missing and 4 453 prisoners of war.
The War Department announced temporary promotions for Arkansans Lorena Hoffman of Jonesboro and Elizabeth M. Wood of Blytheville. Hoffman rises from first lieutenant to captain while Wood advances from second to first lieutenant, both in the Army Nurses Corps.
Representative Snyder argues a $33.6 billion kickback in War Department appropriations will lower future tax costs as the 1944-45 army budget totals about $15.68 billion in new funds plus unobligated balances. He spoke after awarding British decorations to Soviet soldiers and noted Sevastopol’s fall as Red Army engineers begin restoring the base amid resumed fronts and weather-dependent plans for campaigns toward Romania, Lwow, and Berlin.
Hempstead County Farm Bureau criticizes OPA tentative watermelon ceilings as unfair and unjustified. Monroe Kent says early July markets fetched higher prices and notes last year’s crop faced non essential status and fertilizer and transport bans. He stresses one cent per pound ceiling in Hempstead and urges growers to petition Congress and Senators for relief.
