Tolleson Named to W and L Board in Hope

Hope Water and Light Commission confirmed William E. Tolleson to a ten year term succeeding B W Edwards. Tolleson, 42, Oklahoma born and Hope resident 34 years, is a University of Arkansas civil engineering graduate, married with seven children, and serves as a Presbyterian deacon. City actions included free parking from 4 p.m. daily and for a monthly Retail Merchants promotion, plus a loading zone at 216 East Second and pending street funding talks. A major West Avenue B street upgrade began, widening to 36 feet with paving gutters and storm sewers toward the industrial area. A separate item: Larry James Wright found guilty of rape in Fort Smith, recommended life imprisonment.

Wirges Fight to Avoid Court Costs in Dismissed Indictments

The Arkansas State Supreme Court heard arguments by Gene Wirges and five others seeking to avoid paying court costs tied to indictments in Conway County. Judge Roberts had dismissed the charges on January 23 and ordered discharge upon payment of costs. Wirges, former Morriston Democrat publisher, was indicted October 7, 1986 for slander and conspiracy to have someone falsely arrested. Some Girlie Magazines Back on Sale in Arkansas

FARAGOULD Ark AP The girly magazines returned to drugstores Tuesday for the first time since May 9 1964 after a U S Supreme Court ruling allowed a Pine Bluff news agency to sell eight titles previously banned by a city ordinance Paragould has a similar ordinance William E Burnham Jr owner of Burnham News Agency in Pine Bluff hadn't resumed sales saying he was undecided and had stopped distribution early in 1964 Chancery Court in Jefferson County and the Arkansas Supreme Court had ruled the magazines could not be sold.

Memorial plans honor Mrs Jess (Tiny) Davis at Carland Elementary
