The Associated Press notes mild temperatures are expected to persist in Arkansas with fair skies today. Clouds may thicken late tonight into Wednesday as a weak low pressure system may drift southeast bringing a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms in the northern half of the state.
The Hope Star lists Monday weather highs mostly in the mid to upper 70s, with low 80s in the southwest and mid to upper 50s overnight. Cities report overnight lows from Pine Bluff to Fort Smith, and no rainfall was recorded over the past 24 hours per the experiment station report ending 7 am Tuesday.
Cooper recalled a drowning incident where a man tried to rescue his wife then disappeared. Mrs Reed Virginia Thornton and Gregory Reed clung to a loose side board from a truck. The driver warned workers they would cook supper, but returned to the scene as the truck sped away.
Hope Lions Club recently elected new officers led by Y C Coleman as president and Jack Caldwell as first vice president. Seven new members joined on club day, bringing total membership to 101 as of May 6. The clubMissed to win Governor's trophy by under 200 points, losing to South Hot Springs Lions. Lions president Lowell Harris outlined three success factors: hardworking members community support and cooperation with local media. The club aims for 125 members next.
Emmet school faculty selected Rooney Warren and Carlene Harris as Girls State delegates for this year. Sponsored by the Emmet Student Council, Homemakers, 4-H Club and local families, Rooney is daughter of Edith and Everette Warren of Prescott with varied club activity. Harris, daughter of Eddie Hillery and Eddie Harris, is active in Library Club, Class Officers, Student Council, Echo Staff, Who's Who, FHA and basketball.
The Senate Watergate committee states five subpoenaed White House tapes remain needed despite Nixon's transcripts. White House lawyers gain five extra days to resist a showdown with prosecutor Jaworski over 64 tapes. The panel calls transcripts suspect and urges a complete, accurate record of conversations.

Ruby Lutes 80 of Blytheville died when her car crossed the center line on Arkansas 14 and hit a dump truck eight miles east of Harrisburg. Curtis Madden of Lepanto, driver of the dump truck, was uninjured.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy says he plans to run for president and will decide by late next year with a possible earlier decision. He says his Senate record will be his defense if Chappaquiddick questions arise and his family would support his bid.
