The Carter administration plans new rules to tighten unemployment standards and require able bodied welfare recipients to take unattractive jobs. The proposal seeks compulsory public work and to curb perceived abuse of benefits while promising to meet a campaign pledge to reduce welfare costs.
Hope Public Schools outline end of term events. Graduation set for May 17 at Hammons Stadium 7:30 p.m. Elementary students exit at 11:15 a.m. on May 27. Middle and high school dismiss at 1:15 p.m. May 2 and May 25. Reports mailed May 27.
The Rev Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church, age 57, and ten followers were detained by authorities at Bard College in Barrytown New York while claiming they were sightseeing. Police said the group was stopped Thursday about 100 miles north of New York City.
Hope Hempstead County Chamber executive vice-president Robert Schaff outlined a county-wide litter cleanup set for May 14 and 21 with volunteers, prizes, and designated dump sites. A county fire department is in the works, with ten military vehicles to be converted into water wagons and training arranged with Hope and Perrytown crews.
A tractor-trailer collided with a school bus carrying 40 near Jonesboro Arkansas injuring 35 including 32 eighth graders. Seven ambulances ferried victims to two hospitals with none believed seriously hurt. bus turned left into the truck’s path at US 63 and Arkansas 39.
The April unemployment rate dropped from 7.3 to 7 percent, the lowest in 29 months, as 548 000 more people found work and total employment rose to 90 million. Unemployment declined by 330 000 to 6.7 million, with gains broad across groups.
In northeast England Jimmy Carter received a warm welcome as he toured Newcastle and Washington in County Durham. He visited Old Hall the ancestral home of America's first president and met locals including a glassblower before touring a Corning Glass facility. Carter planted a ceremonial tree and received a miner's lamp. He wore a blue cashmere suit bearing his initials and prepared for weekend talks with world leaders.
In Pine Bluff Arkansas the two story Victorian house where Martha Mitchell was born has been saved from demolition by Vanya and Bob Abbott. They restored the home now filled with period furniture and open to visitors who come by bus to view the life of the outspoken Nixon era figure. The Abbotts hope to seek National Register status while noting the public can enter free of charge for now.
