James McCullough, 57, died at his Kilgore home on May 3. He was born in Hope and is survived by his wife Beden, son Frank of White Face, mother Mrs. Lee McCullough of Jal, five sisters, two brothers, with burial in Kilgore via Rader Funeral Home. George S Spragins, formerly of Hope and resident of Arcadia California, died after a short illness. He leaves a wife, two children, six grandchildren, two brothers Eddie Spragins of Texarkana and John F. Spragins of Dallas, and sister Mrs. Otto Siedschlag of Vista, California.
CLARKSDALE Miss AP Martha Tranquilli a 63 year old nurse on trial for tax fraud argued that her tax refusal was a protest against the Vietnam War. She listed six nonprofit groups as dependents on returns and said she gave away most of her income in 1970 71. An IRS agent testified she believed withholding was her right and cited letters and kneeling protests. Her listed organizations include AFSC ICRFM War Tax Resisters League and Jane Addams Peace Assn Inc. Tranquilli lives in Mississippi at Delta Community Hospital where she works and which Gov. Waller had criticized over grants.
Pulaski County Judge B Frank Mackey cannot spend money from his contingency fund without quorum court authorization. Chancellor Darrell Hickman ruled expenditures without specific approval would be unconstitutional, potentially impacting other county judges. The $286,675 fund has received county and federal revenue sharing money.
David Packard a California industrialist with links to military reform is Nixon's top choice for defense secretary sources say. Packard, former deputy secretary, has considered rejoining and may accept with a stock-ownership trust to shield shares in Hewlett Packard.
National Music Week runs May 6 through 13 with the theme Focus the Spotlight on Music. Milam reported no charges yet connected to a wreck near Hope. Mrs. Trudy Dickinson of Hope sustained minor injuries when her car left Highway 67 about a mile west of Hope, crossed a ditch and hit a wooded area while attempting to dodge a dog. several passengers were unharmed.
May 5 marks Poppy Day as the American Legion Auxiliary asks all Americans to wear a poppy. Women volunteers, including mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters of fallen service members, will distribute the flowers made by disabled veterans to honor the dead and aid the living. The program provides income and purpose for veterans, who craft the flowers in hospital wards.
Henry A Kissinger flies to Moscow for a three day set of discussions to salvage the Vietnam cease fire and arrange a U S Soviet summit. He says Indochina and all its aspects will be raised during talks with Kremlin leaders.
