Amid Beirut fighting between the Lebanese army and Palestinian guerrillas, cease fire efforts emerge, with joint patrols announced as bombardment subsides in parts of the city. Tel Zaatar remains volatile as firing continues and curfew is partially lifted for shopping.
Wholesale prices for food and farm products fell in April marking the first decline in six months as processed foods and farm goods drop led by a 2.9 percent plunge in meat prices. The relief was offset by the largest rise in industrial prices in 22 years driven by broader inflation pressures.

Weaver Dolphus Starnes of Bay City died May 2 in a Houston hospital. He leaves wife Jeanette, son Richard of Michigan, daughter Glenda Simon of Bay City, brother Jack Starnes, four sisters in Louisiana, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Friday at 2 p.m. in Bay City Church of Christ. Mrs O A Graves of Hempstead County died today in a local hospital at age 86. Funeral Thursday at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev Norris Steele. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. She leaves son Albert Graves, two grandchildren, a granddaughter, six great grandchildren, and sister Mrs Frank R. Johnson.
Experiment station report for 24 hours ending 7 am Thursday notes clear skies and unseasonably cool tonight with fair and slightly warmer Friday. Lows tonight mid and upper 30s in north central and northwest areas and 40s elsewhere. Friday highs upper 60s to mid 70s.
