Mrs. Jess M. Davis long-time Hope school teacher and organist died at 5 30 this morning in a local hospital after a week’s hospitalization. Born at Little Rock she grew up in Texarkana and El Paso. She taught in Texarkana El Dorado and Hope and was fourth grade teacher at Garland Elementary. Funeral at First Baptist Church with burial in Memory Gardens. Oakcrest Mortuary in charge.
El Dorado Arkansas AP Police Capt. R. E. Pennington age 40 was named chief of the El Dorado Police Department replacing J. Garland Thomas who resigned March 30 amid an investigation into rumors and accusations. Lt. Hugh Andrews received a commendation for serving as acting chief since Thomas’ resignation.
London AP reports Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his Cabinet formally agreed to seek British membership in the European Common Market. Wilson planned a Commons announcement after Cabinet review, signaling a long, difficult negotiation with expected entry not before 1969. Transition periods for Commonwealth and others were cited as needed.
Nathan L. Schoenfeld of Little Rock, a two term Garland County state representative and former Garland County prosecuting attorney, joins the Arkansas Insurance Department as legal consultant and auditor. Commissioner John Norman Harkey announced the appointment on Monday. He has also served as attorney for the Public Service Commission.
Former Gov Orval Faubus buys the Piggott Banner with Harold Jinks and Clifford Cole as partners. Payne will run the paper for a month, change effective Monday, Faubus already owns the Madison County Record in Huntsville and the Advance Reporter at Waldron and Arkansas Statesman weekly.
Lt Gov Maurice Britt is under expanded medical care in Little Rock after a mild pneumonia case. Britt’s office said he will likely resume duties later this week, with health updates issued Monday.
Ira Thatcher, 73, a bookkeeper at a Batesville plumbing company, died Monday after a collision at a Batesville intersection. His wife Pearl, 70, a passenger, was reported in good condition at Batesville hospital. The Thatcher car struck a vehicle driven by Walter Reed, 22, who was not hurt.
A late season storm slammed the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley causing deadly tornadoes and widespread destruction. Sixteen deaths were reported, including twelve from tornadoes, with extensive property damage in Minnesota and neighboring states. The system brought unseasonable cold, disrupted travel, power, and communications, and delayed school openings as frost and freezing temperatures spread south.
State Insurance Commissioner John Norman Harkey agreed to revise part of a five page directive regulating life and annuity insurers in Arkansas. About 80 company representatives argued the directive, drafted April 6, was too harsh and risked harming smaller firms. Harkey intends to adjust some wording to ensure buyers understand what they purchase while keeping core protections. Spokesmen included members of the National Association of Life Companies and Arkansas life insurers.
Washington officials said the United States with Britain and West Germany plans to pull up to 36 000 servicemen from four combat squadrons in West Germany. The move, including dependents, aims to save about 100 million dollars next year at U.S. bases.
Arkansas state police director Herman Lindsey says gambling operations found in February are closed after raids in Hot Springs and Garland County. He cites seizure of slot machines as proof the force means business and notes Gov. Rockefeller’s request sparked the statewide survey.
The County Extension Homemakers Council sets Thursday May 4 at the Experiment Station Hut for a fish themed meeting. Morning features will cover fish from water to table including storage and nutrition with Paul Oller and Leroy Gray leading. Afternoon includes cooking demos by Bonnie Smith and Dolores McBride, plus devotional, news from the Rate Board, and a group sing. Registration starts 9:30 a.m. with a 10:00 a.m. program, lunch at noon and adjournment at 2:30 p.m.
Marines fought from Hills 681 861 and 881 in a drawnout battle across the northwestern South Vietnam frontier near Laos. By Monday more than 9 6 Marines were killed and 276 wounded, as 333 enemy troops were reported killed and air support faced weather limits. In Saigon, U S fighters destroyed MIG interceptors as air raids increased and delta casualties rose to 16 killed and 40 wounded with 625 fighter bomber sorties reported.
Mrs. J. C. McFarlin of Little Rock, state president of the League of Women Voters, was appointed Monday to replace Mrs. Elslane Trimble Roy on the Arkansas Constitutional Revision Study Commission. Mrs. Roy resigned as assistant attorney general to become law clerk to Judge Gordon E. Young, and Chief Justice Carleton Harris named McFarlin to succeed her. Nathan R. Whitehead of Little Rock, the state Highway Department's assistant permit clerk, was named to replace Eugene Walter as chief permit supervisor.
