Unrealism in Thant Vietnam Peace Proposal
AP News Analyst James Marlow reports U Thant's three step peace plan for Vietnam faced US skepticism. Thant proposed a halt to bombing, reduced fighting, and talks including the Viet Cong, while the United States insisted on conditions and hinted that a ceasefire requires negotiations first. The sense of unrealism stems from differing views on conditions and sequencing for a truce.
