The National Weather Service notes a high of 38 degrees and a low of 26 in Little Rock on Sunday, marking the coldest maximum and a tied low for March 24. The outlook remains cloudy and not very cold with persisting cool conditions across Arkansas.
The Hope Star reports a cold weekend with highs from 35 to 40 across cities like Harrison Jonesboro El Dorado and Pine Bluff. Forecasts call for cloudy skies and slightly warmer air with drizzle in the south, highs mid 40s to near 60s, and lows in the 30s. Rainfall totals include El Dorado and Texarkana with .21 inches.
Fort Roots Veterans Hospital patient Thomas Atkinson, 56, originally from Shreveport Louisiana, drowned Saturday after obtaining a hospital pass. Lt Gene Walther said his body was seen floating on the river’s south side near Rock Island Bridge by Capt Joe Borghetti during a routine patrol. Dragging operations had not begun as drowning was not suspected at first.
Obituary notices report the deaths of Grover A Gigsby 58 of Broken Bow Okla and John W McRoy 47 of North Little Rock both with services planned in Oakcrest and First Baptist Hope. Valda Laha 73 of Hope also dies. funeral details list Herndon Funeral Home with burial in Memory Gardens. Survivors include spouses children and siblings with multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The Urban Renewal program in Hope has run for 123 months. Executive director Mike Kelly delivered a progress report to the Hope Rotary Club at a Friday luncheon on March 22 in Town and Country. Coner Boyett served as program chairman. About 140 public housing units exist in Hope with 50 more under construction on Shover Street.
Colonel Bill Miller announced at the monthly Commissioner meeting that bids were submitted for five State Police district headquarters. Rogers Construction Company of Newport bid $74,950 for the Newport and Forrest City districts, Consolidated bid $99,256 for Little Rock, McGinnis Construction $85,000 for Hope, and Watson-McFarlin Construction Company $74,365 for Harrison. Total project cost reported at $408,521. The report also notes ongoing district improvements, strong financials, and community support events including Ladies Night preparations and Rotary guest attendance.
California Governor Ronald Reagan leads GOP county chairmen in a Gallup mail survey with 39 percent of 2,384 respondents naming him for the 1976 presidential nomination. Vice President Ford 24 percent, Nelson Rockefeller 12 percent, and John Connally 7 percent. Reagan enjoys broad support among rank and file Republicans as well.
Southwest District Future Farmers of America contests were held in Hope on Friday March 22. Thirty schools participated with Mount Ida taking electricity, Hampton winning agriculture mechanics, and Lake Hamilton placing third in both. the top teams advance to the Arkansas State contests at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville on April 19. Parli pro winners were Nashville first, Mount Ida second, Sparkman third. Bruce Maloch Emerson led public speaking, Jimmy Bryant Fordyce was second, Dennis Shields Oden was first.
Mrs. Cecil Kidd, secretary treasurer of the Anderson Cemetery Association, announces a called meeting for Tuesday, March 26 at 8 p.m. at the Anderson Baptist Church. Lance Gordon Beard earns a $400 academic scholarship to Southern State College for 1974-75. he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Beard of Hope Route 2 and will graduate Hope High School as a senior class vice president and Beta Club member. Navy Airman Recruit David L. Osborn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy J. Osborn of Star Route, Dierks, completed recruit training at San Diego and attended Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas.
