Musical history of America and its early influences

Read before the Library Club by Mrs. RM Wilson on October 13, 1899, the talk surveys American musical progress from Puritan views on instruments to Boston and New York’s early societies. It notes Brattle Street church gifts, the Stoughton Musical Society, Mandel and Haydn Society, Lowell Mason, Harvard Musical Association, and the Boston Symphony lineage, with references to early instruments, composers, and shifts toward piano and harpsichord use. The speaker contrasts colonial conservatism with later national developments, mentioning Ragtime echoes and wartime musical ties, and closes with remarks on American music’s modern standing and a nod to Mrs. LaGrorie’s work.
