Dr Lester Sitzes was elected to serve as president of the Hope Rotary Club for the new year starting July 1, 1965, at a regular meeting last Friday noon at Town & Country Restaurant. Officers named include Paul Klipsch Vice-president B N Holt secretary Steven Bader Treasurer Clyde Fouse and Webb Laseter Jr Directors. Reverend Bob Wilhite presented a Virginia history program by color film. Guests included Lyman Armstrong Madison Indiana Frank Gillette Crossett Ed Jordon Texarkana and Doyle Shields Gurdon.
The state Division of Communicable Disease Control said 7,642 influenza or influenza-like illness cases were reported for the week ending March 15. The total since the end of January reaches 65,138 cases.
The Federation of Music Clubs offers a six week summer scholarship with an April 12 deadline. Auditions on May 1 in Mitchell Hall Ouachita Baptist University feature two contrasting style compositions performed by orchestral instrumentalists and vocalists. Entrance fee is $2. Hope High marked Safety Week with a driving slogan contest a safety driving contest and a closing assembly. Richard Lang won safest boy driver Sarah Gordon won the girl’s title the juniors were hailed as the safest class Billy Etter won the $5 slogan prize and Set 1 Giles of the Arkansas State Police spoke at the event.
U S and Saigon sources report nonlethal gases used in Vietnam to disable Viet Cong fighters. Gases, released from helicopter dispensers, allegedly induce tears nausea vomiting and bowel loosening to immobilize the enemy and aid prisoner rescue.
Charles Willie Stuart was shot in the hip by his brother Sammy Lee Stuart during a Saturday afternoon argument at their home 1012 North Graham Street. The injured man was treated at a local hospital and released. Police investigated and charged Sammy Lee Stuart with eight liquor offenses and other counts including assault with intent to kill.
About 400 marchers led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. left a frost covered pasture near Selma and began a 14 mile leg toward Montgomery on the second day of the water drive. The crowd slept in two tents while National Guardsmen guarded the camp.
The Arkansas Supreme Court ordered a new trial in a dispute over opening a street through private property owned by Claude G. Kirksey and Mildred Kirksey. Jonesboro aimed to extend Washington Avenue to Caraway Road, with the city offering $500 for additional right of way. Justice Jim Johnson noted the lower court ruling must be overturned for further development.
The University of Oklahoma reports 2815 students on the honor roll for 1964 65 with Reletha Upton and Joseph Crain named among others. Henderson State lists Shirley Hartsfield on the Dean's List. Ouachita Baptist students from Hope will teach March 22 to May 14, including Jenna Duke Dorothy Smith and Sharon Fielding. Airman Orville Steadman completes Lackland basic training and heads to Walker AFB SAC. The Game and Fish Commission warns against lifetime licenses. resident license price set at 3.50 with July 1966 effective dates for hunting and January 1 1966 for fishing.
A sixth dynamite bomb was found in a predominantly Negro area of Birmingham, raising patrols after five devices already uncovered beneath a Poole Funeral Chapel panel truck. Army demolition experts disabled the device, which used an alarm clock timing gear and matched the earlier bombs totaling about 300 sticks of dynamite.
