Editor Applauds Paper for Retirement Tribute and Clash with Gazette
Elmer R. Brown of Hope Arkansas thanks The Star for printing his retirement note and commends the editor’s editorial. He recounts a long public-service career, corrects a past classroom detail, and recalls a 40 year-old dispute with County Judge Luther Higgason over delinquent land lists and pay. He also criticizes the Arkansas Gazette for endorsing a gasoline tax diversion.

Bumpers vetoes three tax exemption billsed
Gov. Dale Bumpers vetoed three bills that would exempt items from Arkansas sales and use taxes. The Reynolds Metals aluminum reduction power use exemption and the paper mill chemical exemption could cost about $1 million yearly. He also vetoed a tax break for rentals of recorded audio and video tapes by television stations. He said exemptions must prove justification and that the chemical catalysts are not within the basic manufacturing exemption.
