Barbershop artist with no formal training finds local fame
Royce Laverne Roberts, also known as the barbershop artist, paints in oils without lessons and lives in Houston. His landscape works impressed Gov Preston Smith’s guests at a December appreciation dinner, drawing praise from Mrs. Ben Durr of Port Arthur who gifted two Austin countryside paintings to the governor. Roberts, a Hempstead County native, served in the Navy in the 1940s and now runs a barber shop while painting during spare moments with an easel by his chair. His mother Ivory Roberts and wife Barbara Muncie admire his realistic style, seen in subjects from Indian chiefs to flowers. He has a son Charles, 20, who also shows artistic promise, though more modern in approach.
