Weather report for 24 hours ending 7 a.m. Wednesday shows a high of 70 and low 35. Forecast calls for mostly cloudy, warmer conditions with scattered showers in western areas tonight and Thursday, with showers and a few thunderstorms across most of the state, ending and turning cooler in the west by late Thursday afternoon. Low tonight in the 40s to 50s. High Thursday mostly in the 70s.
Hope High School Student Council sponsored a Tootsie Pop Week from March 8 to 12 to inject fun into the routine. Each student got a free candy coupon, entered a licks guess, and six council members licked pops under a counter. Tony Stevenson won a pinata shaped like a giant Tootsie Pop after a three way tie with Kathy Graves and Randy Townsend.
A Circuit Court jury, after about one hour, found Andre Furlow of Strong guilty of second degree murder in the shooting death of Curlis Lumsey Lumsey, who was killed with a .25 caliber pistol last Sept 9. The sentence recommended was 1 year in prison.
An un-named University of Louisville coed bitterly reacts as New York appellate court rules her father need not fund her schooling. The 4-1 decision upholds a father’s right to set rules and refuse support, reversing a lower court order that would have required payment or a 30 day imprisonment.
The Agriculture Department Crop Reporting Board estimates 46.5 million acres of soybeans will be planted in 1971 up seven percent from 1970. Corn plantings rise 4.3 million acres and sorghum 2.9 million. Cotton totals 12.1 million acres, up one percent, with Arkansas figures showing cotton 1,070,000 acres and 56 percent of 1970 planted.
Jim Allen of Lederle Laboratories spoke to the Hope Kiwanis on Prescription Drugs in Modern Medicine. He explained drug safety, FDA testing, and the low approval rate for new drugs, noting the industry spent 446 million on research and no shortcut to new medicines. Kiwanian Eddie Whitman announced the 28th Annual Kiwanis Variety Show for April 16 at City Hall Auditorium.
The Associated Press reports a low over Western Utah and Northeast Nevada will move east bringing rain to Western Arkansas late tonight and across the state Thursday. Highs today near 60s to mid 70s, cooling to 60s north and 70s south Thursday. Overnight lows 40s to low 60s with notable city readings listed. In Washington, AFL-CIO Communications Workers seeks at least a 25 percent one year wage rise from Bell Telephone in next month’s bargaining, plus improved pensions, insurance, shorter week and job-category pay.
Opponents of Arkla’s bid to raise industrial gas rates told a state Public Service Commission hearing that Arkla averaged about 24.3 percent return on stockholders’ equity during 1967-69, far above the PSC’s fair 12 percent benchmark. Reynolds Metals, an industrial customer, argues long-term contracts should not be voided. Arkla seeks to withdraw approvals to fund a pipeline into the Anadarko Basin.
Obituary notices report Mrs. Julia Eleanor Arnold of Hope and Texarkana dying in California with services in Miami Beach and burial in Memory Gardens. Also noted are the death of Thomas E. Dewey at 68, former New York governor and two presidential nominee, and the passing of Donald H. Busse, 52, a national harness driving champion, from cancer. A Massachusetts report records the first horse encephalitis in a human since 1956.
Jonesboro Arkansas AP Joe Brooks chair of the Arkansas State University Board of Trustees says a reliable source told him he will not be reappointed due to being too controversial and objective. His five year term ends January 1972 amid politics of appointments and clashes with administration.
