Fruit Freeze Ravages Southwest Crops Hit Highland Orchards Hard
A severe frost devastated fruit and truck crops across the Southwest. Highland orchards expect only 600 to 700 carloads of peaches, far below the 3,000 possible, with many varieties destroyed or damaged. Radish fields near Dey Queen and Gillham died, tomato plants in frames were killed, and only late bearing trees may survive. Experts warn that very little fruit will reach outside markets, while some farmers may access Reconstruction Finance Corporation loans to replant.
