The editor notes martins return to the area arriving in pairs to inspect 12 hole metal box setups. Volunteers plan to tether or close openings to manage sparrow nesting as we begin year 15 of the record keeping with a table showing arrivals and departures from late February to mid July.

Arkansas Man Found Dead After Fall From Bluff

Arkansas State Police report the body of a Fayetteville man in his 20s found near a bluff above the Buffalo River after an apparent fall. The body was discovered by strangers who began a search after finding an abandoned car in the Center at Newton County area. The man, believed to have been hiking, apparently fell from the bluff about 20 miles south of Harrison. Identity held pending kin notification.

Corps to lease DeGray Lake land for camping facility

The Army Corps of Engineers agrees to use 45 acres at DeGray Lake State Park near Arkadelphia as a camping facility for mentally retarded veterans. Commissioner Charles Acuff says MRDDS will be charged $1 yearly and will seek a federal public works grant to build a lodge with dining and other improvements. lease runs 25 years. The site lies at the lake edge near the state park lodge.

Bishop Kenneth Hicks to speak at Old Washington festival

The Rev. Kenneth W. Hicks of Little Rock will address the ninth annual Jonquil Festival at Old Washington State Park March 11 12 and 13. He will preach at the eleven oclock union service March 13 at Old Washington United Methodist Church. Hicks is bishop for the Arkansas area of the United Methodist Church. He was consecrated in July 1976 and has served churches in Colorado Nebraska and Kansas. The Old Washington church, organized in 1817, is believed by historians to be the oldest west of the Mississippi in continuous service. the current building was finished in 1861 and is now under restoration. Reverend John W. Rushing of Emmet is the current pastor.

Miner survives five days in flooded coal mine face to face with death

Ronald Adley waited five days for rescuers as ten miners were trapped in the Kocher Co. mine beneath Big Lick Mountain after flood water swept through a shaft. He watched two friends Renninger and Shoffler swallowed by the torrent. Adley dug a tunnel to a pocket and walked out unaided. Rescue drilling continued to reach the missing men as authorities expressed cautious optimism.

Supreme Court nullifies gag order on Oklahoma boy case

The Supreme Court struck down an Oklahoma County judge’s gag order barring three Oklahoma Publishing Co newspapers from publishing the name and photo of 11 year old Larry Donnell Brewer in the shooting death case. The unsigned ruling says the information came from a public hearing and cannot be suppressed. The case tests prior restraints and free press limits on trials.

Two Conway Officers Suspended Over Student Slaying

Two Conway police officers, Lynn Carter and Phillip Doyle, were suspended as State Police investigate the shooting death of Emily Diane Jones, 21, of Jacksonville, a University of Central Arkansas student killed after a high speed chase on U S 65. The pursuit ended when the car stalled after water in a creek. the driver Charles Raymond White, about 20, of Conway, was being held on traffic charges.

Hope appoints John Swift as city manager and water light chair

John Swift, assistant city manager of Decatur Georgia, is named Hope city manager and water and light chairman. The joint board vote was unanimous. Swift cites water transmission plans and a new long term community direction as priorities. He aims to implement management by objectives and focus on next century goals.

Hope school ballot features four races Tuesday

Hempstead County voters go to the polls Tuesday for school elections with four races on the Hope ballot. Candidates include Mickey Becherer and Jack Gathright for position one, Jim Rowland and Gilbert Travis for position two, Don Gilbert and Wayne Russell for position six, and Harry Phillips for a county wide five year term on the Hempstead County Board of Education. Ballot locations cover Hope Fire Station Boxes 1 A through C Rocky Mound Shower Springs, Hempstead County Court House, and Hope City Hall Ward 3 box A Box 4 B, with Fulton voting at the Fulton Library. Also on the ballot is the 48 Mill school tax with 27 Mills for maintenance and operation and 21 Mills for retirement of existing indebtedness.}

University kiss fundraiser tops 3000 for fraternity

Indiana Pa AP Jeff Henzler kissed a beauty queen and eight hours of smiling fans from babies to nuns to raise money for a hospitalized fraternity brother. The Pittsburgh student hit 3,001 kisses before his mom sealed the total at a mall kiss booth on a charity day.
