Three suburban Ferguson housewives filed as candidates to challenge three male incumbents in the April 6 city election. Marilyn Soest Anita Gilbert and Ollie Bauer cited machine rule and opposed the plan to place the city library under St. Louis County control.
Gov. Orval Faubus ordered a state police probe into reports of illegal gambling in Hot Springs after the Arkansas Gazette found slot machines in three clubs. Westwood owner Barney Levine faces a felony charge for operating a gambling house, while counterclaims from Winthrop Rockefeller accuse Faubus of breaking a promise.
Retired U S district judge Harry J. Lemley 21 died Friday in a local hospital after longtime ill health. Appointed 1939 and retired 1958, he served both Eastern and Western Districts of Arkansas as a roving judge. He ordered a June 1958 delay of desegregation at Little Rock Central High, a ruling later overturned. Survived by wife two sons Major General Harry J. Lemley Jr. and Col. Kenneth McRae Lemley, and a sister. Funeral Saturday at First Presbyterian Church.
An AP survey finds military pay raises not preventing loss of officers and enlisted personnel. Army first‑term reserves and first‑term enlistees show high re‑enlistment refusals. Navy losses exceed 70 000 last year with 12 000 electronics specialists affected. Air Force retention lags in high demand skills. Marine Corps first‑term re‑enlistment declines. House proposal by Rep Rivers seeks a 10.7 percent pay increase at about 1 billion dollars per year.
The cigarette tax bill cleared the Arkansas Senate 29 4 after a prior 24 4 vote and moves toward Gov. Faubus signature. It would raise two cents per pack, generating about 3.6 million dollars annually for the general fund and help meet agency budget requests.
Rep Talbot Feild Jr of Hempstead County and Rep Marion Crank of Little River County outline a congressional redistricting plan to be sponsored in a April special session. Gov Faubus backs a April 12 call to handle redistricting after the regular session ends March 11. Hempstead County Republican Women chairwoman Mrs. Lynn Harris urged Arkansas women to ride a special bus to Washington DC for the 13th annual Republican Women’s Conference at the Sheraton Park Hotel. Nixon will keynote April 1 with Gerald Ford Ray Bliss also speaking. other national leaders include Barry Goldwater William Scranton Everett Dirksen George Murphy and Thurston Morton. A panel on campaign techniques will be led by Bob Wilson of the Congressional Campaign Committee.
Citizens National Bank of Hope will provide a 500 college scholarship for a member of the 1965 Hope High School graduating class. President R M LaGrone Jr says the funds honor local growth and aim to assist a deserving student with college potential. Selection rests on need achievement and ambition with a school personnel committee. The winner will be announced later.
The Miss Tan America pageant, the first nationally coordinated Negro beauty pageant, will be held in Dallas April 7-10. Local, regional, and state winners are now being selected through pageants in 66 cities to compete here for Miss Tan America 1965.
The president of The Associated Press Managing Editors Association urged a summit conference on legal and journalism leaders to end the free press fair trial conflict. George H. Beebe of the Miami Herald said the issue has become a free for all word battle causing tensions between journalism and the legal world and should be settled out of court in high level talks.

Martha Allison and Susan Turner travel east for a Columbia Scholastic Press meeting in New York and Broadway shows. Dr J W Branchs quarter horse trained by Bobby Sykes at the local arena wins Houston Junior Roping. Peggy Lloyds $250 Southern State scholarship renewed for 1964-65. she is Sigma Tau Delta president and Who's Who list. Patricia Ann Davis earns a band scholarship at Southern State. Byron Denman also wins a band scholarship. Garrett Memorial Baptist Church to honor basketball coaches and players Sunday 7:30. School remains in session Saturday. Delights opponents Delights broadcast by KXAR at 6:30.
Viet Cong appear to have won a military and psychological edge 50 miles east of Saigon. They overran Rung La at sunrise on Wednesday as 125 regional government troops suffered heavy casualties. A thousand airborne troops were airlifted toward Xuan Loc area, with gaps in plans and uncertain entry into Rung La, while civilians ferried bodies to trucks.
In Natchitoches Louisiana a massive underground natural gas pipeline blast killed 17 people including nine children. Five homes were leveled and cars melted as a 32 inch line ruptured on a Texas to New England system. Governor McKeithen urged resources to prevent a repeat.
