Sugar price surge lifts February grocery bills nationwide
An Associated Press market basket survey found sugar price increases across 13 cities in February, lifting the 12 month grocery bill by 16 percent overall. Eggs fell but not enough to offset sugar costs. wholesale costs and beet sugar cuts in production were cited as drivers, with prices up 8 to 22 percent year over year and sugar climbing from about 70 cents to $1 per pound by March 1, 1974.

Detroit AP reports massive auto industry job cuts have hit 2,050 white collar positions, with 8,000 hourly layoffs. GM, Ford, and Chrysler curb salaried staff through attrition and nonreplacement while sales slump. Ford notes 600 nonexecutive salaried layoffs since January. Chrysler cut 650 since December.
