Pirates bid farewell to Forbes Field in sweep of Cubs

The Pirates closed Forbes Field with a 3-2 and 4-1 doubleheader sweep of the Cubs, moving seven straight wins and narrowing the NL East race. Roberto Clemente sparked the opener with a double as bases loaded, while Bob Robertson’s single and a Mazeroski walk produced the winning run in the eighth. In the nightcap, Matty Alou’s two-run single followed a deliberate walk to Mazeroski, giving Pittsburgh a 1-1 tie in the fifth. The Pirates trail the Mets by two percentage points and head to New York for a three-game series. Other NL results included Montreal’s win over New York, St. Louis splitting with Philadelphia, and Cincinnati holding the lead with three solo homers. The Dodgers and Giants also won, extending their divisional standings. In Cleveland, R H Sikes won $1,520 in the Cleveland Open after tying for second with 280 total. Miller Barber earned $1,206 with 281, and Richard Crawford $250 with 292.
