Debt Ceiling Rises to 358 Billion Under Johnson
Congress sent to the White House a bill to raise the national debt limit to 358 billion dollars, with Johnson certain to sign. It would boost the limit to 366 billion on July 1 1968, and adds a 22 billion immediate increase. Without the bill, the ceiling would revert to 285 billion and jeopardize solvency. The measure ends the cycle of temporary increases and sets a mid 1969 permanent ceiling of 365 billion.
