GOP Planning Strategy Against New Tax Bill
Washington June 23 House Republican leader Martin of Massachusetts set up his policy committee to map party strategy on the so called phony new tax bill. Some Republicans privately label the bill political dynamite and plan to vote for it next week. The measure would slash excise taxes by about 1.01 billion dollars on fur coats jewelry luggage cosmetics movie tickets travel diets and other items. It would offset revenue loss by new taxes on large corporations. Rep Kean said the bill reduces the tax on luxuries while shifting the burden to necessities. Martin called it a phony tax reduction bill and warned it raises taxes on others despite some relief to certain taxpayers. The GOP and many Democrats favor excise tax cuts with reduced government spending to offset revenue loss. Ways and Means chair Doughton said the 633 million boost on big corporations goes too far and prefers spending cuts, but will push the bill through as the only path to excise relief.
