Rep. David Pryor and Rep. John Paul Hammerschmidt joined in bi partisan support for Rep. Wilbur Mills who seeks a government program evaluation commission. The pair introduced identical measures endorsing Mills plan to locate and eliminate nonessential programs and waste, arguing the federal bureau complex causes overlap and confusion. The commission would review federal programs for effectiveness and set funding priorities.
Dorsey McRae speaking for Foster Realty Co and Hope Village Shopping Center urged the City Board to back a plan to straighten the Highway 67 curve at Third and Shover. The plan would move a gas station back and widen the street. approval was given and the proposal will go to the Arkansas Highway Department. The group also voted to buy an excavation machine for 25,544 and set a special meeting with the Zoning Commission to discuss a street program.
In Little Rock AP reports the Public Employees Protective Association of the University of Arkansas Medical Center votes to sue if Bernice M. Tice is not reinstated. The board acted Tuesday to challenge her dismissal as unjust.
In the Mekong Delta near Can Tho and Tan An, Communist guerrillas struck two hamlets killing or wounding civilians and militiamen, with civilians counted at about 80 dead or injured. U S Dragon Ship planes provided air support and ground forces battled late into the night.
The Soviet Union urged an emergency U.N. General Assembly session to compel Israel to withdraw from territories seized in its blitz against Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. A Security Council vote was forecast to fail, paving the way for Assembly action. Thant would query U.N. members for a 62-country majority to convene on 24 hours’ notice.
State Purchasing Director Sidney Kegeles says the B F Goodrich Co of Akron Ohio will save at least forty thousand dollars yearly on tires for cars and trucks under a roughly three hundred thousand dollar contract. The firm guarantees passenger car tires for twenty eight thousand miles and truck tires for thirty thousand to fifty thousand miles. Goodrich will supply all tires at a cost of six thousand six hundred seventy five cents per mile and will buy back worn tires. Three firms bid on the contract.

Jefferson County Sheriff Buck Oliger said Tuesday Jr. Drue ton Bruton, former Tucker Prison Farm superintendent, posted $1,000 bond on two counts of excessive inmate punishment from February. State Atty Paul Antinori ruled the fatal shooting of 19 year old Martin Chambers by Patrolman James Calvert justifiable homicide, saying Chambers fled after burglary and larceny. Negro leaders warned of renewed violence as fires and looting followed over three nights, with National Guard deployments and police reinforcements in Tampa.
Five Columbia County Negro teachers in McNeil filed a federal suit asking to be reinstated and to block new hires while the case proceeds. The plaintiffs claim the McNeil School Board plans a unitary system with minimal faculty, noting district enrollment of 485 last year, 75 whites and 310 Negroes, amid segregation tensions between Southside and McNeil schools.
