Crestview Florida AP An Army specialist 4 George H Newberry 27 was charged with first degree murder in the death of Barbara Childs 18 of Pine Bluff Arkansas. Police say the teen was abducted on a Destin Beach walked the shoreline beaten strangled raped shot and drowned. An officer stopped Newberry Tuesday morning near the crash site and found him with sand on him and torn clothes leading to his arrest. He was jailed without bond in Crestview Okaloosa County.
The Nixon administration announced four grants to finance voluntary metropolitan school desegregation and indicated about a dozen more approvals are forthcoming. Under the Emergency School Aid Act, $223.6 million will be allocated next year to promote desegregation and aid disadvantaged minority children. Funds will go to San Antonio Independent School District, Bibb County Georgia, Mobile Alabama for biracial education complexes, and Farmington Connecticut for busing black children from Hartford.
