The National Weather Service warns of a wet spell with scattered showers and thunderstorms across Arkansas through Saturday. Heavy rainfall is possible in some areas as warm, humid air covers the state. Several severe thunderstorm warnings were issued this morning.
Thunderstorms were stirred by unstable air as a cold front moved from the northeast U.S. through southern Missouri into Oklahoma. The front drifts southward into Arkansas today with drier air and cooler temps expected tonight. Sunday to Tuesday call for showers or a few storms and little temperature change with highs in the 80s to near 90s and lows in the 60s. The station reports 90/72 with no rain in the last 24 hours.

Herbert R. Littleton D.O. graduates May 18 from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine Missouri becoming a physician. He is married to Carolyn Beck Littleton and will intern at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital in Tulsa after earning degrees from Houston and Arkansas.
At a grade crossing in Lower Makefield near Philadelphia a Reading Railroad commuter train struck a heavily loaded tractor trailer. The collision killed three people aboard the two car train as coils weighing about four tons were hurled into the first car. The train was en route from West Trenton New Jersey to Philadelphia and the accident occurred around 11 p.m. Thursday night.
In Jefferson County on Arkansas 15 near Tucker, Leo F. Pitts 65 of North Little Rock died when the car he rode in crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head on. Four others were injured according to State Police.
A federal judge ordered four malpractice insurers to open financial records to Rhode Island doctors amid antitrust claims. The AP report notes widespread doctor slowdowns in several states, with hospitals incurring losses from 35,000 to 1 million dollars. Rhode Island eyes a shared risk pool for 600 of 1,400 doctors.
Some 260 students from 88 Arkansas communities will earn degrees at the 97th annual commencement of the University of Arkansas Medical Center. Degrees include 105 doctors of medicine and 37 bachelors of science in nursing among 14 programs. Dr. James L. Dennis will preside and confer with Fred Pickens officiating.
William Lee Maxwell, 35, granted parole after a long fight over his 1961 rape conviction and death sentence in Arkansas. His case, Maxwell vs. Bishop, helped spur Supreme Court scrutiny of jury sentencing standards and led to heightened debate on the death penalty while he served a 20 year term at Cummins Prison Farm. Maxwell’s defense argued jury sentencing could bar testimony, amid broader questions of justice and race in capital punishment.
A.P. report notes James Allan & Sons Inc with plants in Stockton California and Gooding Idaho faces an Agriculture Department complaint for failing to pay over 219000 dollars of livestock purchases in May and owing the full amount as of May 23. Pay delays ranged from 3 to 22 days across multiple purchases.
