The Home of Garland's Wife and Early Washington Stores Listed
A fragment recounts Mrs. Garland and other women serving soldiers with food and laundry in Washington. It notes Garland died in Washington City on July 26, 1869 after a speech before the Supreme Court, with his final words unfinished due to apoplexy. It then narrates Garland’s bold 1872 coup in Arkansas politics, describing his maneuver to aid Baxter against Brooks, a river crossing, kidnapping of judges, and federal response, ending with references to several local merchants and shops active from 1860 to 1886 among a list of Washington retailers and establishments.
