Army to Send Crippled GI to Vietnam

FT, LEWIS, Wash AP Spec. 5 James G Sparks says he has a surgical steel rod in one leg limiting his walking but the Army will send him to Vietnam. Sparks, 22, a microwave technician, was injured in a 1967 auto accident and placed in a body cast. Induction center doctors in Detroit drafted him in March 1969 saying the disability was bad but not enough to keep him out. He was exempted from jumping and running during basic training and later cleared for activity other than deep knee bends. His mother was heartbroken by the news.
