Schweiker calls for better military exams after defects found
Sen. Richard S Schweiker urged improved screening for military inductees after a GAO report showed ongoing admission of unfit men. Nearly 40,000 service members were discharged for prior defects in fiscal 1968 and 1969, with examples including a kidney scar and a missing thumb. The Pentagon spent 17.9 million for discharges and related costs. The GAO urged changes to balance inductee flow, noting Pittsburgh's station capacity and fluctuating daily workload.
