Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, premier and dictator of Portugal for 36 years, died at his Lisbon home after a long illness at age 81. The government secretary said he died at 9:45 a.m. President Americo Thomaz, abroad at the time, was notified and expected to return. Salazar's rule, marked by austerity and tight control, left Portugal financially balanced but with low wages and harsh conditions for workers.
City police reported an accident at 3 15 this morning at Sherman and East Compress Streets. A vehicle owned by M M Leasing Co driven by Charles A Shepard collided with a vehicle driven by Willard Sorrels. Sorrels vehicle struck a house knocking down the front porch. Sorrels was charged with DWI. Officer Jesse Brown investigated.

The House trimmed the bill by 850 million, while supporters warn a veto could strain Congress. The measure funds aid to districts near federal installations, college grants, and direct student loans.
Republican primary voting sites listed by precinct and town across Hempstead County. Absentee ballot positions include Governor candidates James MacKrell and Winthrop Rockefeller, along with Lt.
