Postal Street Academies Reach Slums
In Atlanta, C T Martin touts a built in advantage for street academies run by postal workers in Summerhill slum. A $1.04 million federal grant funds six cities to educate 250 dropouts nationwide with flexible curricula aimed at earning high school equivalency certificates rather than reentering public schools. The Summerhill site opened May 7 with 59 enrollees. program uses post office work and unconventional teaching aids to spark learning. Fulton County schools report traditional programs with a 50 percent drop out rate reduction over ten years.
