Ex mayor Hugh J Addenizio and four codefendants were found guilty on 64 counts of conspiracy and extortion in a Mafia backed scheme to squeeze payoffs from contractors doing business with Newark. Sentencing date not set. All five free on 25 000 bail. Addenizio, a former congressman, served 14 years and had been re elected mayor in 1966 before losing to Kenneth Gibson.
Two heavy firecracker explosions rocked the House of Commons causing smoke and panic. Members dived to the floor and fled toward exits as a man in the gallery yelled after the blasts. Barbara Castle, a former Labor cabinet minister, jumped clear and rushed from the chamber.

Tower and Thurmond to shift unfair practices cases from the NLRB to the courts, with AFL-CIO opposition and support from regional business groups and retailers.

Senate investigator Robert B Choate told a subcommittee that many heavily advertised cereals such as Wheaties Cheerios shredded wheat and corn flakes provide calories but little nutritional value beyond energy. He urged a congressional probe as the FTC investigates the industry and listed cereals he praised for nutrition along with others he deemed mostly empty calories.
The Associated Press reports clearing skies and slightly warmer weather for Arkansas tonight as a low pressure area moves northeast. Hurricane Becky dominates regional conditions with highs in the 80s, rains and clouds scattered across the state, with temperatures from the upper 0s in the northwest to the upper 60s in the south. Overnight lows span Fayetteville 46, Harrison 66, Jonesboro around 63, Pine Bluff 63, Texarkana 67, El Dorado 66, Memphis 64, Fort Smith 65, while rainfall totals in the hour ending 7 am include about 0.2 inches at Jonesboro, 0.24 at Pine Bluff, and 1.39 at Memphis.
PINE BLUFF Ark March 1 AP The National Labor Relations Board notified Brown Manufacturing Co that it found merit in a charge against United Furniture Workers of America alleging the company engaged in violence intimidation and threats against nonstriking employees during a labor dispute in Pine Bluff Arkansas.
Mrs Susie Churchill 81 of Cord died Wednesday after being struck by an automobile in Batesville Independence County Sheriff Paul Kelly said.
Conway Ark AP report outlines mistrial fears in the embezzlement case of Robert J. Pruitt former head cashier at State College of Arkansas. Circuit Judge Russell. The dispute centers on campaign activity tied to the imminent retrial setting.
Honolulu AP reports a U S South Korea conference closed with no timetable for pulling back about 20 000 of the 62 000 U S troops in Korea. South Korean President Park Chung Hee opposed cuts for four to five years and warned Cabinet members would resign if troops were withdrawn.
Calgary AP reports a forest fire advancing toward the whooping cranes in Wood Buffalo National Park Alberta Northwest Territories. About 310 troops deployed to defend habitat as nine fires burn across roughly 26 000 acres. The park hosts 50 60 adults plus young and hatchlings. 22 more are in captivity. The wild flock winters at Aransas Refuge Texas.
The Hope fire department responded to a late night run to the Verde Flowers home in Patmos just before midnight Wednesday. Neighbors observed the smoke and reported the blaze which destroyed the house.
Two Arkansas publishers say their weekly papers were dropped from Gov. Rockefeller's ad schedules due to editorial criticism. Wells of Petit Jean Country Headlight and Whitehead of News-Advocate note intimidation aims, while aides say deletions reflect editorial policy grounds.
Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller told about 700 at Monticello regional HQ that the $6 a month welfare raise was not political. He said officials could have waited until November but the money was available and he had "cleaned out" Faubus era scandals, vowing not to return them.
The Hope school counselor Floyd Young Jr was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Forrest Singleton on the Hope City Board. Young becomes the first Negro in Hope’s city government and will serve until December 31, 1972. He holds degrees from AM&N Pine Bluff Texas Southern Henderson State and is active in housing and planning commissions.
An erroneous Arkansas Gazette report claimed Robert L. Herbert acted as Hope city manager, but officials denied the item this morning. Mayor Frank Douglas and City Manager G. G. Medders refuted it while AP rejected the original story.
