Environmental reform and mercury poisoning collide in 1970
In mid 1970 two major events shape pollution fighting efforts. President Nixon proposed reorganizing federal environmental oversight into a single agency, the Environmental Protection Agency, and moving radiation standards away from the AEC. Mercury pollution was found in waters across at least 17 states, underscoring immediate health risks and the limitations of existing controls.

Offshore Lease Sale Reaps Nearly $98 Million Near Louisiana
The Interior Department accepted bids on 19 offshore oil leases near the Louisiana coast totaling about 97.8 million dollars after 21 of 34 tracts drew bids. Forest Oil Corp led with 23.06 million for tract 2079, while a Signal Oil and Gas, Louisiana Land Exploration Co., Amerada Hess and Marathon group bid 15.38 million for tract 2097. Some small plots were rejected and overall 73,360 acres were offered in a drainage sale aimed at protecting oil deposits from adjacent production. The sale follows Interior Secretary Walter Hickel’s halt on similar sales last March after the Gulf spill. The government will collect bonuses and ongoing royalties from successful bidders.
