San Francisco Model Yacht Club Showcases Hand Built Vessels
In Lake Merced North Lake area the San Francisco Model Yacht Club hosts a sectional competition featuring hydro and monoplane classes. Entrants from across the state bring tiny gasoline powered, remote controlled yachts up to 75 inches long for 700 yard races. The event, begun in 1901, now attracts over 100 entries, merging speed with craftsmanship as power craft grow in prominence while sailing ships retain a loyal following.
