The forecast shows a 30 percent chance of precipitation across Arkansas through Tuesday with partly cloudy skies, warm temperatures and humid conditions. Showers and thunderstorms formed Sunday and moved across much of the state in the afternoon and evening.

A 100-strong caravan of Chinese and Burmese opium, believed headed for foreign markets, crossed into Thailand from Burma over the weekend. Four Thai policemen were killed when a patrol near the Thai Burmese border in Chiangmai was forced to retreat. Thai narcotics officials called it the first caravan since Indochina upheavals and warned more caravans may move through northern Thailand. Authorities said last year two caravans totaling 442 tons were seized from the Golden Triangle region.

Six women who slashed the accused rapist with knives after a friend’s assault remain free as police say none have been arrested. The victim, John Dotson, 20, was jailed on sexual battery charges and hospitalized for wounds to the stomach shoulders and arms. Police say the attack followed an arrest attempt at Dotson’s home based on a rape complaint.
At the Sheraton Inn luncheon the Hope Rotary Club reviewed its town’s first 100 years. Lester Sitzes and Mary Anita Laseter led a Centennial program noting Rotarian influence, origins of the name Hope, early business owners, first UDC chapter, and a city manager milestone. Gerald Keith chaired in president’s absence with guests Dale Jones, Al Kuhn, and a bearded visitor from Louisiana.
Allen Brothers Magnolia Livestock Auction Inc of Magnolia Arkansas was ordered to cease violating trust account requirements of the Packers and Stockyards Act. The firm consented to the order and waived hearing. The action aimed to ensure proper trust account handling for proceeds from consigned livestock sales and to protect consignors.
Authorities search to identify a white male found in a Salvation Army van in downtown Altheimer. The body, with a single fore head wound, was discovered late Sunday night and held in Pine Bluff for identification.
