The move marks a departure from prior policy as nations seek to uphold the Smithsonian agreement amid renewed pressure on the dollar and devaluations elsewhere. The action follows Britain’s exit from the agreed rates, with other countries, notably West Germany, buying dollars to back their currencies. The gold window remains closed pending a new monetary system.
