The infant son of Mr and Mrs Bill Ray Hastings of Prescott Route 4 died early Friday at Hempstead County Memorial Hospital where he was born on Thursday July 17. Graveside services will be at 3 pm Friday at DeAnn Cemetery in Prescott with burial under Herndon Funeral Home of Hope.
A six car commuter train bound for home derailed in Madureira Rio de Janeiro smashing into the Imperio Serrano dance school. Officials later revised fatalities to 12 with over 100 injured as rescuers worked through rubble. The engineer Wilmar Valentin Linace, 28, was critically injured.

Tampa AP report on five month bribery conspiracy trial of former U S senator Edward J. Gurney and three others. Jurors excused for closing arguments after 21 weeks and 105 witnesses. Gurney faces seven charges including conspiracy to create an illegal political slush fund, bribery, unlawful compensation, and lying to a grand jury with up to 42 years in prison and $80,000 in fines.

In Washington the Senate and House clash over banning separate physical education classes for boys and girls. The Senate killed an amendment to block nationwide coed gym classes by 65 to 29, while the House had passed a similar measure 212 to 211. The vote sends the $7.9 billion education-aid bill back to the House. An Abzug aide said House leadership will align with the Senate on the issue, noting gains in votes since Wednesday. The denied amendment would block HEW sex discrimination rules effective next Monday, which supporters say advance women’s rights and allow voluntary gender segregation in some contexts. Regulations permit sex segregation in contact sports, separate locker rooms, and a three-year school adjustment period, and ban single-sex school organizations.
The House replaced its deadlocked intelligence panel with a 13 member CIA committee and rejected a bid to seat Rep. Michael Harrington. Speaker Carl Albert named Rep. Otis Pike chairman with members Aspin Milford Hayes Johnson and others. Holdovers include Giaimo Edwards Stanton Dellums Murphy McClory Treen and Kasten Jr.
