A weak cool front drifts southward through the southern plains and should affect Arkansas for the next day or two. Increased cloudiness and shower chances are likely this afternoon and tonight as the front stalls in northern Arkansas.
Oakland California AP Sen. Alan Cranston is nursing a sore leg muscle after reportedly pulling a muscle in his upper right leg during a 100 meter dash at the Second Masters Regional track meet. The 61-year-old Democrat, a former arch critic of the Vietnam War, was running for time when the setback occurred. no official updates on his condition were immediately available.
Secretary of State Kissinger departs for a four day European tour to push a Sinai settlement between Israel and Egypt and to advance Soviet nuclear talks. He will confer with Gromyko in Geneva and Rabin in Bonn after Paris talks on oil producer consumer dialog.
Corning Ark voters rejected a plan for a five dollar city car sticker intended to fund an ambulance service. With no local doctor or hospital residents rely on nearby Piggott for care and the city would have diverted street funds to operate the ambulance. The two vehicle sticker proposals failed by margins of 146 139 and 139 122.
The Kiwanis 60th convention in Atlanta Georgia ran June 22 to 28 at the Omni Convention Center with 18000 attendees. Delegates enjoyed top entertainment from amateur groups and professionals including Up With People and Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass.
In Little Rock the state Soil and Water Conservation Commission faces questions over alleged falsification of minutes from its June 26 meeting. Attorney for the commission doubts the attorney general can overrule the panel. The probe centers on a $166,566 disbursement to Mena for a water project, tied to the fund administered by the department of Finance and Administration.
Mrs Winnie Sanford 75 of Tokyo Ark died Tuesday in a Murfreesboro nursing home. Born October 26 1899 in Sweethome Ark she was member of First United Methodist Church in Sweet home. Services Thursday 2 pm Latimer Funeral Chapel Rev Bruce Bean officiating Burial Mt Tabor Cemetery Latimer Funeral Service. Survived by daughter Ann Watson Texarkana two brothers Harold Higgins Hot Springs and Harry Higgins Tokyo Ark two sisters Clyde Cooley Nashville and John L Bryan Ft Smith Ark four grandchildren seven great grandchildren.
The Hope Civic Improvement Association will meet Thursday, July 10 at 7 30 p.m. in the Youth Center at City Park. Church conference Saturday, July 12 at 6 p.m. at BeBee C.M.E. Church.
The Hope chapter meets Thursday July 17 at 7 30 p m in Municipal Hall small courtroom to elect and install officers for the new DAV chapter. State Commander Raymond Humphrey of Hot Springs will assist in organizing and installing. All members and eligible veterans are urged to attend.
