The National Weather Service forecasts scattered thundershowers across Arkansas, with more in the southern and eastern parts. Expect afternoon and evening activity through Wednesday as an upper level disturbance combines with daytime heating.

General Francisco Franco, 81, was hospitalized in Madrid with phlebitis in his right leg. Sources said the condition is not grave, though he suffers acute pain, and doctors are available at El Pardo Palace. Prince Juan Carlos was informed of the situation.

He holds a Cabinet meeting Wednesday and a briefing on the Soviet summit for congressional leaders Thursday before heading to the California White House in San Clemente for about two weeks.
Police hunted a dragnet for seven inmates who escaped from a state prison work crew after commandeering a prison bus near noon. Six others who fled with them remained jailed. The group fled on foot as guards fired. Within hours, two surrendered and three were recaptured. A fourth fugitive was later captured along the Cumberland River.
Mrs Mable LaRue has spent six weeks in Hope and Texarkana hospitals and is back at the Snyker Hotel recovering from minor foot surgery. Friends wish her a speedy recovery. Funeral services were held for Ray Tatom 55 at First United Methodist Church Stamps with burial in Lakeside cemetery. Melvin Adams Sr 53 native of Mc Caskill buried Chapelwood cemetery Texarkana Funeral Home chapel. L R Byrns 76 of Mineral Springs buried Mineral Springs cemetery with survivors including wife Inez and three daughters.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger lands in Madrid for a six hour visit to initial a defense cooperation declaration with Spain. He will meet Premier Arias Navarro and Foreign Minister Cortina to formalize the pact renewing the 1970 defense agreement. He plans to testify in Ehrlichman’s trial in Washington Wednesday.
A committee began closed sessions on May 9, with James D. St Clair, President Nixon's defense attorney, making the initial presentation. A Sept 15 transcript excerpt reveals Nixon proposed retaliating against The Washington Post by leveraging renewal of licenses for Post owned TV and radio stations by the FCC, and quoted him saying of Edward Bennett Williams that "we are going to fix the son of a bitch."
The Hope Rotary Club opened its new year with Gerald Keith as president and Merril Roberts as program chair. Roberts from Hope Community TV discussed the old Highway 67 East TV tower, signal processors, trunk and feeder lines, amplifiers, coaxial cable, lightning impact, and co channel interference, answering member questions. Keith praised Ed Alderman as Top Egg Producer of the Year in Arkansas and welcomed guests Lou Westerberg, Dick Westerberg, and Roy Weaver.
A weather system produced funnel clouds and heavy rain from the central Rockies to the Atlantic. Tornadoes touched down in Texas New Mexico Alabama Georgia Florida and Minnesota with winds up to 81 mph in Albany Minnesota.
ACLU lawyer Melvin L. Wulf alleges CIA meddled in the personal affairs of ex agent Philip B. F. Agee to hinder settlement with his wife and lure him back to the United States. The CIA rejects comment as officials call the Agee affair a threat to Western Hemisphere operations.
George Stewart formerly of Patmos appears in The Great Lester Boggs movie shown at the Hope Drive-In this weekend. A 1948 Patmos High and University of Arkansas graduate, Stewart works for the U.S. Government and has acted in three films and a TV commercial. He is married to Patmos native Bobbie Ann Payne and has two sons.
