New York Yankee catcher Bill Dickey and Guy Freeling were injured in a head on collision with a farmer near Harrison Arkansas on Tuesday. Dickey suffered severe cuts and bruises while Freeling had a broken finger and cuts. The other driver escaped with minor injuries.
Albert Stone, 24, of Waldo, narrowly escaped serious injury Tuesday morning when he tried to board a southbound Missouri Pacific freight train. Dragged about 100 yards, he clung to a ladder then was jolted free near a rail crossing, suffering a skinned face and no other injuries. He said he was headed to Texarkana seeking work.
John Galsworthy, 65, British novelist and Nobel prize winner, died Tuesday in London. He was acclaimed as a leading social critic of modern civilization and authored The Silver Box and The Forsyte Saga begun in 1922.
The Arkansas House defeated by 31 to 59 a measure to oust University of Arkansas President John C. Futrall and censure foreign born faculty. Former students defended Futrall and denounced the wording as insulting to the nation while labeling the resolution enmity gone mad.
The Arkansas senate passed two foreclosure relief bills. One suspends court jurisdiction over foreclosures on homesteads for this year and next, and the other bars deficiency judgments and allows appointment of the owner as receiver in foreclosure cases. Ghosts of the night raided Hope Route Five Monday, taking 47 chickens from one farm. J A Fowler reported 25 chickens missing, with W A Martin and Henry Fowler also losing birds within 50 yards of each other. Police found truck tire prints and fresh tracks but no further clues.
Berlin Bledsoe and Victor Atterbury, ages 19 and 20, escaped jail in Benton, robbed a Benton store, and were recaptured in Little Rock and sent to seven years at the Arkansas penitentiary for burglary and grand larceny. Sheriff Virgil Rucker delivered them to the penitentiary walls. The pair had a history of prior escapes and arrests dating to December.
Aldridge M Williams longtime Hope cotton businessman with A L Betts died Tuesday morning in Cisco Texas at age 45. He moved to Cisco about five years ago with his wife Mrs Williams formerly Mrs Stell Merrill.
Senator Robinson of Arkansas urged Senate Banking subcommittee to act quickly on emergency farm relief. He proposed temporary moratorium bills and Hull’s plan for a two year halt on payments taxes and interest plus up to one billion dollars for farm aid.
