City of Jonesboro and local utilities backed the request citing at least 300 potential riders from Jonesboro. Delta and eastern carriers objected, and the board said issues should be settled in a hearing. Local leaders listed include Frank Vohler, A H Rushler, George Benjamin, and Mrs Howard Miller.

Washington officials reflect that U S Russia relations remain tenuous in Eisenhower second term with two main factors. First the hopes after Stalin’s death have faded and second crises in Eastern Europe and the Middle East heighten East West tension. Officials caution Russians are unpredictable and pursuing a campaign against the United States while the United States strengthens the Middle East against communism. The risk of Soviet concerns over U S military power in the region is noted amid vulnerable oil fields north of Iran.
