Weather Outlook: Light Showers in Northwest Areas

The Associated Press reports a frontal system will bring a round of light showers to the northwest, with precipitation ending by Wednesday. The National Weather Service notes the showers began this morning in the region as a front moves through tonight and into Wednesday.

The weather system will move through the state through Wednesday bringing cooler air from the northwest. Rain was expected to move southeast this afternoon and tonight. Highs today in the upper 50s to upper 60s then Wednesday in the 40s to 50s. Overnight lows from the upper 30s to near 50 with city readings listed.

Hijackers operate in Barranquilla amid passenger list questions

Health care plan outlines national plan based on private insurance

The Nixon administration outlined to key congressmen a proposed national health plan relying on private insurance bought by employers and employees. It would cap an individual or family’s yearly outlay at 1500 dollars, with a 75 percent premium share by employers after a transition, and separate government coverage for low income and high risk groups. Medicare would expand and Medicaid absorbed into the new plan, but financing remains unsettled and enactment this year doubtful.

Abortion debate persists a year after court ruling

One year after the Supreme Court struck down most abortion bans, antiabortion groups push for a constitutional amendment. Ten states have enacted laws restricting abortions. Population Council reports 800000 abortions under medical supervision in the year. Leading opponents include National Right to Life Committee. abortion rights groups warn the amendment could end most abortions, with a life-saving exception possible.

Editor Weston posts bonds on libel charge in Arkansas

CAVE CITY Ark Joseph H Weston editor of the Sharp Citizen posted a 2000 bond on three counts of criminal libel filed January 9 in Clay County Circuit Court by deputy prosecuting attorney C W Knauts. Weston plans to run for governor as a Republican and said he was reorganizing the party while hiding from authorities. He named James Kelly of North Little Rock as his campaign HQ contact and John Norman Harkey of Batesville as his libel suit attorney. Weston is also appealing another criminal libel charge in Sharp County. The Arkansas Supreme Court recalled a ruling affecting his appeal to the U S Supreme Court allowing proceedings without a state trial interfering. Weston expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision.

Catholics plan anniversary march for pro life rights

The National March for Life Committee will sponsor a circle of life around the Capitol in Washington with a second circle of life formed by one representative from each U.S. congressional district. After the march a rally on the west front will feature national pro life speakers and leaders as red roses are sent to senators and representatives. In Arkansas Our Lady of Good Hope Church in Hope will ring its new bell at noon Tuesday to call attention to the ruling’s impact and urge a constitutional amendment.
